Liberating Love

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” –1 Corinthians 13:1-3, NKJV

According to 1 Corinthians 13:13, love is one of only three things we can experience in this life that will last forever. Although the life God gives us allows us the option to live out our lives in love, we find ourselves living in a hateful and hate filled world.

The saddest thing about that is those who are consumed with hatred do not realize that their rage is like a cancer. It is far more destructive to themselves than to the objects of their hatred. That is the deceptive nature of all sin. Continuing to expound upon 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, we learn the juxtaposition of hatred and love. Hatred relishes vengeance; love is long-suffering and forgives.

Hatred dwells in bitter sadness; love continues in joyful kindness. Hatred revolves around jealous envy; love lavishes itself in generosity. Hatred parades itself in pride; love walks in humility. Hatred rudely demands obeisance; love offers respectful submission. Hatred climbs over others; love encourages and lifts them up. Hatred harbors constant suspicion; love understands the need for grace. Hatred refuses to turn its back; love turns the other cheek. Hatred takes pleasure in evil; love rejoices in the truth. In short, hatred ensnares; love liberates. While Hatred eventually burns itself out; love never fails!

The reason our world is filled with hatred is because it is under the curse of sin, as it says in Genesis 3:17. That is why we live in a world full of harshness and hatred, rather than the blessings of love. That is why we each have to make the conscious choice as to what will be the dominant factor in our lives.

The reason most of those in the world choose to remain in the  solitary confines of hatred and bitterness, is because they refuse to surrender themselves to the God of love, so they can be set free. 1 John 4:1-2 says: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

The corollary to this is simple: If you do not know God, you cannot really know love or how to love. That is why this world continues to live in hatred and envy, jealousy and rage. That is why people waste their time coveting what they don’t have, instead of thanking and praising God for all they have and enjoy! Since you will have to make the choice for which you will live, as the TobyMac song says, “Speak life!”
